Case Study 1
A large UK based printing company purchased pre-press equipment to the value of £500k from a leading supplier. On installation, the assessment of the printing company was that the equipment was 'not fit for the purpose'. The matter went to litigation, and I was retained to prepare a report on behalf of the printer. On presentation of the report, it was used as a means of negotiation between the parties, and the matter was settled on the basis of the findings without proceeding to court.
Case Study 2
Digital printing equipment, sold by a major UK based supplier to a digital print company did not meet the expectations of the client. The client ceased paying the hire purchase payments due, and the matter proceeded to litigation with three parties involved, the client, the supplier and the finance bank. I was appointed as single joint expert in this case by the three parties to the action, and prepared a report for the court. This case proceeded to court, and I was cross examined by barristers representing the three parties. As the matters in dispute were largely technical, the Judge relied heavily on the report in reaching his decision.
Case Study 3
A major UK based printing company had received an order, through a third party print resource company, to print a large number of booklets for an overseas government department. The quality of the printed matter became the subject of a dispute, and the government concerned refused to pay the print resource company who in turn refused to pay the printer for the work, and litigation ensued. I prepared a report instructed by the print resource company. The report was used as a basis to negotiate an out of court settlement.
Case Study 4
A major UK based manufacturer commissioned the production of a new prestigious brochure from a design company. The brochure was to be the principal means by which the manufacturer reached his potential market throughout the world. When the brochure was completed, the manufacturer was very disappointed with the quality. He refused to pay the design company's invoice and litigation ensued. I was retained to prepare a report on behalf of the manufacturer. An assessment of the design, photography, proofing and printing needed to be made. At trial, as the matters were technical, the Judge relied heavily on my report in reaching his conclusions as to the responsibilities of each party to the action.
Print Consultancy Case Studies
Lockheed Martin
This company secured the contract to undertake the 2002 UK Census on behalf of The Office of National Statistics. I was appointed as the print consultant to advise on the quality metrics to be employed in the printing of the forms, and to oversee the printing process. Quality standards had to be stringently enforced due to the fact that the follow on process of high speed data scanning was very critical. This project ran over a period of two years, and was successfully completed.
SP & S (Formerly HMSO)
This company needed to upgrade their pre-press and printing capabilities for the production of security documents. I was appointed as the consultant, and over a period of 18 months advised on new working processes, equipment and software to be employed in pre-press, and developments to the press equipment to improve registration and reduce make-ready time.
Clement & Foster
This company needed to upgrade their pre-press processes following the installation of a high specification B1 press. I was appointed as the consultant for this task, and over the period of one year, advised on the introduction of new work flow processes and computer to plate technology.
British American Tobacco
This company has 60,000 separate items of artwork that apply to its products being marketed throughout the world. These items were all in hard copy form, and there was no effective library system. I was appointed to advise on the most appropriate methods of digitising the artwork base, and formulating a digital library so that artwork could be centrally controlled and be available for transmission electronically throughout the world on a call off basis.
